Frame from Impermanence animation. Fabric render using HoudiniFX. This work is a 3D animation using the site of Borobudur, in Indonesia. Borobudur was created as a large-scale 3D mandala. My 3D model is of the top tier of the structure. Borobudur is a pilgrimage site for Buddhist monks who will climb the stairs of the entire structure to meditate at the top.

You Never Know Which Direction You're Going In. All these 3D renders are, in one way or another, an exploration for my Buddha Elemental art, so they often take drastic turns, kind of. Meaning, the 3D renders are also a process of learning how to improve my ability with one of the mediums I decided to use. In Buddhism, the idea of transcending, changing, impermanence, etc, is prevalent. So, exploring visual ways of going from a solid, to a gas, to nothing, seems like a path worth exploring. Plus, it's always a good idea to explore other possibilities BEFORE dedicating yourself to one path.

VDB Breakout Tutorial Test 1. In HoudniFX software, a VDB is typically defined as a voxel database, or a kind of geometry primitive that stores data in a three dimensional grid of voxels. I was doing their tutorial because I'm interested in finding a way that I can communicate the concept of Karma. This is explained in the other images showing cell division.

When Buddhists think of Space, it isn't celestial space, it's the concept of space - a place, event, or room, for everything else to manifest. To follow Mondrian' abstract art of maximum reduction, I thought, space would be as soon as ONE point has a place to become two points. Once that happens, all other patterns emerge from creation. So this what my animation if going to be about - Karma. This is just one of many tests and I haven' even decided if I'll use this - however, it's also a great lesson in using point in Houdini. See Karma 3.

Frame from Impermanence animation. The concept behind the Impermanence animation is to use the site of Borobudur to communicate both the Buddhist element of Air and the idea of Impermanence. My 3D model is fairly accurate of the top tier of the structure, designed to be a large-scale 3D mandala - with some creative license. On special occasions, monks will put up a series of prayer flags that represent the Buddhist elements. However, I used a sphere, as a top piece and added just one white flag, as this represents Air. Also, I created the model with "new" bricks, before weather deterioration.

HoudiniFX Hi-Res 3D Render of Borobudur. Borobudur is a place of pilgrimage for monks, who will climb the stairs of the large-scale structure to get to the top tier, where they will meditate. The monument is designed to be a 3D mandala, representing the Universe and the transcending from the World of Forms to the World of Formlessness to Nibbana. In my 3D animation it will play a role of communicating the Buddhist idea of Impermanence, with a bit of irony - because, Borobudur was once lost to civilization, suffered two volcanoes, was rediscovered, looted, and is now being restored.

Karma 1. Other nearby images explain how these renders are exploring Karma. When I began to think about how I could create a comprehensive Karma animation it was rather overwhelming. Mindful, Karma is best understood as cause and effect. The first Buddha Elemental sculpture, Space Buddha, will represent the Buddhist element of Space, communicate Karma, and also, of course, explore "space." See Karma 2.

Besides using this render to explore Karma, it's also one of many tests to work with, and control points, MASSIVE amounts of points. These renders are using millions of points and, though this is a 4k render, it's still a lo-res test. I could easily make this more colorful, but I'm just doing most tests in the blue range because this for the animation work that will go with Space Buddha, which represents the element of space, which in turn, is represented by the color blue.

You Can't Stop Time 1. There are so many things I like about working in a 3D digital space, including the ability to get whatever camera angle, aperture, depth-of-field, etc., that you want. This series of images was exploring the idea of time, time passing, and time's relationship to "space," since the first Buddha Elemental sculpture will represent the Buddhist element of Space.

VDB Breakout Tutorial Test 3. Rather than actually modelling each of these images, conditions are simply set to grow the smaller spheres, multiply them, and let them meld together. I'm not paid by SideFX, who make HoudiniFX software, but I admire this software and I believe in the idea that where credit is due, credit should be given. Just as I give credit for Unsplash lol.

VDB Breakout Tutorial Test 2. In image 1, I explain that I'm exploring how to communicate Karma, which is explained in other images. However, with every procedural action in HoudniFX, I really like to think about what else I'm learning that can apply to other work. These images look like medical illustrations, but the real lesson, from a 3d perspective, is that VDBs allow for amazing procedural combining, subtracting, and melding of material in a full 3d digital space. So, if the material is connected, it can also be 3d printed.

Frame from Impermanence animation. When Buddhists create an image of Buddha, or art related to Buddhism, they are always cognizant of the fact that it will be impermanent. Siddhartha's realization just prior to attaining Nibbana: All is Impermanent, All is Without a Self. However, for example, with the case of creating a sculpture of Buddha, the monks will perform an eye-opening ceremony before the sculpture is made public, wish for the Buddha sculpture to find its home, and hopefully exist for 5,000 years -- because, even Buddha, will be impermanent.

You Can't Stop Time 2. Oddly, all these 3D renders, in one way or another; clearly to perplexingly, abstract to realistically, are all explorations for my body of art titled, Buddha Elemental. They are also tests to simply learn 3D tools, procedures, and possibly ways to move art, back and forth, from a 3D digital space to a real, physicals space. This will take some time to explain, so it will be done over many images, in time.

Authentic History: Grounded in the real archaeology and the different African tribes and kingdoms.The Aesthetic: We employ a "Cinematic Noir" visual style, characterized by high-contrast chiaroscuro lighting, volumetric moonlight, and hyper-tactile 8 K textures. It is a world where firelight reveals secrets and shadows hide monsters.

You Can't Stop Time 3. Keep in mind, since these 3D renders are from a long period of learning how to 3D model, render, animate, and print, they aren't always perfect. Hopefully though, they're good enough for some purposes. As I went through the learning process, I always tried to turn tests into possible, usable images. Obviously, creating interesting images of "time," will always be relevant. But being critical of one's own art is also, ALWAYS relevant. So, what's wrong with You Can't Stop Time Image 4?

<h3>Afrocentric, Innovative and creative Stories</h3>African history, African characters, and African stories are really lacking in Western media. Even when any media shows African themes, most of it is a portrait of vulnerability and exploitation. Colonization, slavery, corruption, and savagery are the most common story concepts. The wealth of the African culture is never portrayed as the main focus, and mostly there is a western character that appears as the saviour. The African characters in most stories are reduced to stereotypes, unable to control their own narratives.With the success of Black Panther (2018), acceptance of and interest in Afrocentric stories grew; however, even Wakanda was a fictitious nation that needed to be protected and hidden from the world. The current social justice movement is another factor that makes an African epic a very pertinent historical story to be told.
